Episode 6: Raina Bloom
Posted: February 18th, 2009 | Author: Eugene | Filed under: Episodes | 10 Comments »
Librarian Raina Bloom stops by to teach us about the Dewey decimal system, talk about the Bechdel rule, and I run the “sexy librarian” joke fully into the ground. Also, serious discussion about the role of gender in media!

I cringed when you said you bend the spine of books. I hate that and dog ears. It’s so CRUDE!
Stop judging me.
I also cringed when you said bend the spine!!!
i totally loved the “stamping” of books, i miss that
We didn’t even talk about dog-ears! So, forgive me this, but –
The paper that most paperback books is printed on is highly acidic (I won’t explain why – you’ll all drop dead of boredom at my feet if I even try). Dog-earing your pages just gives the acid a weak point at which to start consuming your poor, poor book. Now, granted, this is a process (called “a slow fire,” btw) that takes decades to really set in, but why even give it a chance, right? Also, as you’re weakening the paper at that point, it’s more likely to tear/fall out.
I can feel the sound of a cracking spine in my teeth, you monster. I sent this to Eugene already, but I want to share it with all of you – http://xkcd.com/280/
For the record, I also dog ear most of my books. BOOKMARKS ARE FOR SQUARES!
We’re all friends here, so I’m going to be honest with you – I own about as many bookmarks as I do cardigans.
YOUR BOOKS HATE YOU, EUGENE.

First, let me say I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your conversation. I realize I might be jeopardizing my chances at being Raina’s friend when I say this next thing (though I’ll wager we might never meet in person – I’d still like the possibility to remain) but I have to confess I’ve been known to bend a spine or two. Never much for dog-earing. Absolutely love (LOVE, LOVE) making this crinkling/ sound with books when reading by pinching the right side of the book with my thumb and index finger and rotate wrist – - it is the perfect sound to read to. Really, you ought to try it even if it damages books.
